How to buy

Welcome to thesaleroom.com. We make it easy for you to scour, discover and buy from a selection of over 3 million unique, hard-to-find items that you just won’t find elsewhere. Buying here is safe and easy. We work with 500 trusted auction houses from all over the world, who value and assess each item, so you’ll find authentic pieces at hard-to-beat prices, all at the click of a button.

So how does it all work? Let us take you through it in just 3 easy steps…

STEP 1: find the one

Know what you want?

If you know exactly what you’re after, type it straight into the big search box on our homepage, or at the top of any page on our site.

Need inspiration?

If you’re after some inspiration, you can browse through our categories and see what hidden gems you discover. Select from the ‘Browse by Category’ dropdown at the top of any page to dive right into what interests you.

Want to be notified/alerted?

Why not set up an alert for your search using the button in the top-left of the screen? We’ll email you when new items that match your search are added to the site, so you’re always in the know.

Step 2: place a bid

Create your free account and get bidding. There are a couple of ways you can place bids on our site, and you can use whichever process you prefer.

place a max bid

The most convenient way to bid at an auction is to place a max bid. You just have to place a maximum bid on an item (the most you’re willing to pay for it), and then we’ll take care of the bidding from there. We will never go above your maximum bid, and will only ever bid just enough to keep you in the lead. It’s the most convenient way to bid at an auction.

bid live

Connect to a live auction in real-time and experience the atmosphere of the auction environment with live audio and video feeds.

For more help on live bidding, you can read more about bidding and buying in our Help Centre here.

Step 3: win your item

We have our fingers crossed for you, and here are a few tips that will increase your chances of winning!

1. Participate in the
live auction

If you’re available (which we understand isn’t always the case), we recommend logging in to the live auction to see the bidding action in real-time.

Not only is it an exciting experience that gets pretty addictive, but you can keep an eye on your item and the bidding activity. So, if the price rises higher than your max bid you can jump in live and hit that big BID button to avoid missing out.

2. Keep an eye on
your email inbox

In some live auctions (where you see a ‘current bid’ on the lot page), if you’ve placed a max bid, we’ll notify you via email if you’re outbid. So make sure you take a look at your inbox every now and then so you can increase your max bid if/when required.

Remember, max bids work best when you place the absolute maximum price you’d like to pay for the item. You won’t necessarily pay this (you’ll only pay the minimum required to win the item), and it saves you constantly updating your max bid.

3. Do your
research

Tools like our Price Guide show years and years of past auction items and what they finally sold for.

These tools are helpful because they will give you an idea of what similar items have sold for in the past, and that can help you decide how much you should bid now. You don’t want to go in too low and be disappointed, but too high and you might not get the deal you’re hoping for.

4. Ask for more
information

If you’re tempted by an item but need some more information before you get bidding on it, you can easily and quickly contact our friendly auctioneers who will be happy to provide you with the details you need.

You can simply click on our ‘Ask a question’ button on any lot page, and message the auctioneer directly. Their replies will appear in your email inbox (the one that is associated with your thesaleroom.com account).
